Last week, I had a Discord call with Aiden Cowie, my collaborator on an exciting project. We decided to recreate a scene from The Lord of the Rings, focusing on one of the most iconic locations: the town of Bree. Our conversation helped us align our ideas and divide the work based on our individual skills. This post shares how we planned the project, what I worked on during the week, and how we are moving forward.

Choosing Bree and Defining Our Roles

When Aiden and I started discussing the project, we both had similar ideas about which part of The Lord of the Rings to recreate. We listed several well-known locations from the movies, such as Rivendell, Minas Tirith, and the Shire. Eventually, we agreed on Bree because it offers a rich mix of natural landscapes and architectural elements, making it a perfect challenge for both of us.

We then talked about our individual skills to decide who would focus on what. I specialize in creating landscapes, including mountains, forests, and foliage. Aiden’s strengths lie in building structures and props. This division felt natural: I would handle the terrain, trees, and the interior of the Prancing Pony, while Aiden would focus on the buildings and other props around town.

This clear split allows us to work efficiently and play to our strengths, ensuring the project moves forward smoothly.

Planning the Week Ahead

Before ending our call, we set clear goals for the week leading up to our next meeting on Thursday. Our main tasks were:

  • Gathering image references for Bree and other relevant scenes from The Lord of the Rings movies.

  • Creating an asset list to guide our modeling and texturing work.

The asset list would help us keep track of everything we need to build, from trees and mountains to buildings and interior details. This way, we avoid missing any important elements and can prioritize our work.

Collecting Image References

During the week, I focused on finding high-quality image references that capture the look and feel of Bree. I searched for screenshots from the movies, concept art, and fan recreations that show different parts of the town, including:

  • The overall layout of Bree

  • Close-ups of buildings and roofs

  • The interior of the Prancing Pony

  • Surrounding landscapes like forests and mountains

To organize these images, I used an app called PureRef. It lets me place all the images on a single board where I can easily view and compare them while working. This setup keeps my workspace clean and helps me stay inspired and accurate as I create the landscape and assets.

Working on the Landscape and Interior

With the references ready, I started building the landscape. My first focus was the mountains and hills around Bree, making sure they matched the rugged but inviting look from the movies. I paid attention to the textures, using a mix of rocky surfaces and grassy patches to create a natural feel.

Next, I moved on to the forest areas. I created different types of trees and foliage to reflect the variety seen in Bree’s surroundings. This diversity helps the scene feel alive and believable.

Finally, I began working on the interior of the Prancing Pony. This part is crucial because the inn is a central location in Bree and has a lot of character. I used my references to recreate the wooden beams, furniture, and lighting that give the inn its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

What’s Next for the Project

Aiden is focusing on modeling the buildings and props, such as market stalls, fences, and street lamps. Once we both finish our initial assets, we will combine them to see how everything fits together. We plan to review the scene and make adjustments to improve accuracy and visual appeal.

Our next steps include:

  • Refining textures and materials for both landscape and buildings

  • Adding small details like signs, barrels, and other props to bring Bree to life

  • Testing lighting setups to capture the mood of the town during different times of day

By keeping our workflow organized and communicating regularly, we aim to create a faithful and immersive recreation of Bree that fans of The Lord of the Rings will appreciate.
